This course is designed to provide a hands on introduction to biology with a human emphasis. If you are looking for a lab to complement Biology 160, this is it. We will start off with scientific measurement and cell biology, examine cell processes like mitosis and osmosis, move on to heredity, and and spend two lab sessions doing detailed dissections of fetal pigs.
Note that if you have taken Biology 102, you should not enroll in this course, as Bio 161 covers many of the same laboratory exercises in Bio 102. In some cases, Biology 161 and 102 may be substituted for each other.
The textbook for the course is a spiral bound volume entitled "Laboratory Manual for General Biology" (5th Edition: Perry, Morton, & Perry) and was published in 2007. Do not purchase a used copy of the text, as it will likely be incomplete. In Biology 161, students must tear out the pages for completed exercises. So, used copies will likely be missing the correct pages. Also be aware that you will have to purchase (or obtain used) your own dissection kit to participate in the lab.
Please consult the current course syllabus for details on lab assignments, grading, and other information.
